Microsecond Technology introduces the MS-259-G infrared mechanical shutter, opening a square window for thermal imaging applications.
Microsecond Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. (MSTD) has released a new infrared mechanical shutter module, the MS-259-G. This product features a square opening design of 15.8 × 13.8 mm and an overall thickness of only 4.2 mm, making it suitable for various infrared optical systems that require light shielding, correction, or protection of sensors.
Square opening designed for rectangular sensors
Infrared sensor arrays are mostly rectangular, and traditional circular shutter openings waste visible area during alignment, requiring additional space in the lens design. The MS-259-G uses four blades to form a 15.8 × 13.8 mm square opening with a tolerance of ±0.05 mm, allowing the opening shape to fit the effective area of the sensor and releasing more usable optical area within the same module size.
The module measures 25.9 × 25.9 × 4.2 mm, with a rated voltage of 3.0 VDC, a rated current of 183 mA, and a single-action pulse width of 30 ms. Its tested lifespan exceeds 500,000 cycles at a 1 Hz operating cycle. The operating temperature range is -20℃ to +75℃, and the storage temperature range is -40℃ to +85℃, complying with RoHS 2.0 regulations. The standard blade configuration is made of PET material, with metal blades available for thermal imaging correction applications requiring uniform radiation.
From thermal imaging correction to on-site inspection, the application scope continues to expand.
The role of the mechanical shutter in infrared systems has long since expanded beyond simply opening and closing. Engineers are using it in these areas:
Thermal imaging non-uniformity correction (NUC) — provides a uniform reference radiation surface when the shutter is closed, allowing the system to correct pixel drift in real time and maintain temperature measurement accuracy.
Vehicle-mounted night vision and ADAS — Pedestrian and animal detection systems require regular calibration to maintain recognition stability during prolonged operation.
The drone-mounted thermal imaging module —with a thickness of only 4.2 mm and a low power consumption of 3V—is quite friendly to payloads that are sensitive to weight and battery budget.
Power equipment and machine tool inspection —Handheld thermometers are used repeatedly in outdoor high and low temperature environments, so a wide temperature range and long lifespan are basic requirements.
Firefighting and Search and Rescue Equipment — Due to harsh on-site conditions, the modules need to provide reliable shielding in front of the sealed camera.
OGI (Oil Leak Detection) and Industrial Process Monitoring – High frequency of fixed-point equipment operation; 500,000 cycles provide sufficient maintenance intervals.
Lens dust protection and privacy shielding —closing the shutter when not in use, while simultaneously blocking dust and unnecessary image capture.
The opening size, blade material, wire length, and connector type can all be adjusted according to the customer's mechanical requirements. If the existing model cannot directly match your company's design, the engineering team at Microsecond Technology can intervene from the structural drawing stage to jointly carry out customized development.
Designed and manufactured entirely in Taiwan
The MS-259-G was designed, molded, assembled, and tested at Microsecond Technology's own factory in Taiwan, and the product is marked as Made in Taiwan. From prototyping to mass production, everything is on the same supply chain, and customers can receive direct support in terms of delivery time, quality traceability, and place of origin requirements.
